I Don't have Time to be Stressed!
Part VII
1. WORK WELL
Take care of yourself AT WORK.
Get to work a few minutes early (and avoid the stress rushing to beat the clock.)
Take your breaks ON TIME!
Make a point of getting away from your desk at breaks and lunch. NEVER eat lunch at your desk.
Watch your daily sugar consumption. While sugar gives you a quick and very temporary burst of energy, the sugar crash will usually leave you feeling more lethargic and less focused than you began.
Watch your daily caffeine consumption. High caffeine consumption chemically induces the same physiological responses as regular stress. (In other
words, caffeine stresses your body out!)
Breathe - When we’re stressed, we breathe shallowly and breathing shallowly (as when we’re working) can convince our body that we’re in a stressed state when we’re not.
(The following is excerpted from “The Healing Breath of Life” by Relaxologist William G. Carter and is used with the author’s permission.)
The simplest, quickest and most basic way of reducing stress in the workplace is to “take a breather.” Stand up. Get away from your workspace. Do a few stretches. Take some slow, deep breaths. Since breathing is not studied in this culture most of us just do “what comes naturally.” In most cases that is not a good thing, as What Comes Naturally for most of us is to forget to breathe when we are concentrating on an important task. This is Especially True for those of us who spend a lot of time on the computer.
I have coined the term “Computer Trance” to describe the place most of us go when we’ve been at the keyboard for a long time- basically we are in a mental state of self-hypnosis. Most of us hardly breathe at all when at the keyboard. Some of us don’t breathe to the point that when we Do breath the breath then comes in shallow gasps.
Most of us who work on the computer a lot have had the experience of suddenly “waking up,” and are surprised at how much time has elapsed. While we may have gotten a lot of work done, “where did the time go?” The problem with the “Computer Trance” is that many of us not only forget to breathe, we also forget to take breaks! I recommend using some sort of Timer to solve both problems. The most basic way of reminding yourself is to bring a kitchen timer to the office, and set it to ring every few minutes to remind you to breathe. (You might even tape a sign to the timer that says “BREATHE!” And you can use the timer to figure a formula for when to get up and Take Your Breather.)
Another way to remind you to Breathe and to take Breaks is to figure out how to set your computer’s calendar program to remind you to Breathe every few minutes. (Your coworkers will quickly get used to this, and it will rub off on them beneficially). Also you can set the calendar program to tell you It’s Time To Take A Break.
2. SEPARATE JOB FROM HOME

Yearning for cool autumn mornings and the crisp smell of falling leaves?
Then consider Vermont with its glorious display of fall leaves blazing in hues of reds, oranges and yellows.
Normally beginning during early or mid-September, Vermont's foliage season usually extends into late October with the best "color" being found at different places during different times as the season progresses (and dependent on the weather.) The earliest foliage change generally occurs in the northern part of the state near the Canadian border and at higher elevations and progresses south through the season.
Follow these tips to get the most out of your trip:
Make reservations in advance especially for weekend visits keeping in mind that the first two weekends of October are the state's busiest time of the year.
If you can, travel mid-week. There will be fewer crowds and mid-week accommodations will be easier to get.
If your chosen area is booked, consider an alternate area since Vermont is a small state and can be driven from side to side in about an hour.
Take advantage of the geography and plan day trips to surrounding sites and attractions.
Don't be shy! Ask the locals for recommendations on the best places to look. Most of them are more than happy to share their insight and knowledge on the area and, who knows? You might even make a new friend along the way.
