Nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the town of
Mariposa is a small, sleepy western town on the southern tip of Highway
49 (known as "The Gold Chain.") The town is steeped in history, both native
American and gold lore (dating back to John C. Fremont and the California
goldrush of 1849.)
For those living in the here and now, the area abounds with recreational
opportunities from hiking and camping, to river rafting, houseboating
and other outdoor activities. In addition, Yosemite National Park lies
just 37 miles away along Highway 140 (known as the year round route because
it does not close due to weather.)
